2013 Forum on Indigenous Teaching: Building an Evidence Base

Following the success of our 2009 Forum on Indigenous Learning and Teaching, a second Forum was held at the University of Melbourne in October 2013. While the first Forum had highlighted exemplary teaching practice in classroom contexts, our external evaluator noted that the next step was to 'develop guidelines for best practice assessment'. It was time to tackle key issues in assessment and evaluation.

This national forum, titled 'Forum on Indigenous Teaching: Building an Evidence Base', focused on building evidence base for our teaching that goes beyond anecdote. Expert practitioners from several universities in New South Wales and Victoria addressed questions such as:

- How do we know our students are achieving the learning outcomes we aim for?

- Which assessment methods are most appropriate and effective, and why?

- Do we systematically evaluate 'what works' in our teaching and assessment?

Plus the big question:

- How can we prove that our teaching leads directly or indirectly to benefits for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities?
